HOMEMADE WINDOW/ MULTIPURPOSE CLEANER

When did I become such a housewife?!  I didn't want to accept it for a long time but the truth of it is that my life pretty much revolves around cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping at the moment *sigh*.  Anyway after this realisation settled in, I decided to make some changes.  Firstly we have a septic tank so we've been using eco cleaning products since we moved in (chemicals in a septic tank are a big no no), secondly I didn't want to be inhaling all the things we've been convinced we need to spray around our house all the time, and thirdly Ayana likes to 'help' which more often than not involves licking the spray bottle (she's almost outgrown that one!).  So I did some research into natural home cleaners and as has been the case with the homemade deodorant and the hair product they work just as well if not better than the store bought ones!  Plus they cost a fraction of the price to make.

I originally found this recipe because I needed to wash our salt encrusted windows after the last storm.  Now this, along with baking soda to clean the bath and sink with is the only cleaner I use for everything!  It cuts through grease, shower scum, kitchen spills... the whole works.  And don't worry, that slight salad dressing smell from the vinegar doesn't linger for long.

What you need:
2 cups water
1/4 cup white vinegar (nothing fancy, just the cheapest bottle you can find at your supermarket)
1/2 tsp dishwashing liquid

What you do:
Pour the whole lot into a spray bottle, give it a gentle shake and get cleaning!

  1. Hi, I'm a new reader :) I recently made Wendyl Nissen's recipe for (clothes) washing liquid. It's so easy to make and you can put it in old milk bottles or what-not, so it is great for avoiding packaging. It comes out a big gluggy (as she mentions) but it works well. I will try this recipe soon - do you sprinkle baking soda first then apply the spray? Yay for old-fashioned cleaning!

    1. Oh cool I'll have to look into that! No I just sprinkle the baking soda in the bath (or wherever) and wipe over it with a damp cloth, it's really great for getting that dirty ring around the bath clean. Definitely a yay for old fashioned cleaning! x

  2. I am obsessed with white vinegar and baking soda for cleaning the shower!
I have been using above combination or years, it's brilliant. As for the shower floor, I just throw white vinegar everywhere, chuck the baking soda on, thrill to the fizz, and scrub away. So much better than commercial shite! XXX

    1. Oh yeah isn't it awesome! I started doing that too. Cleaning the shower pretty much tops my least favourite housework chore! I also recently discovered that dumping some baking soda into the toilet and giving it a quick scrub makes it sparkle white again.
